Jannah eyed the unconscious Number One with hostility. She had clenched her hands into fists. They were trembling with rage. "Mmm... I'd like to put a bullet in his head right now!"

"Later," Malek said.

They had gone to his old hideout across the street from Dominik's former apartment in Neue Warte. The keys to the basement room still fit; fortunately, the Guard had not changed the locks. His supplies also looked untouched, which was a blessing. The soundproofing was a bonus. However, they couldn't know for sure whether the basement's shielding would be enough to block the Lifewatch from transmitting or receiving any signals. There was no indication one way or the other. In the end, it didn't matter; they had to stop somewhere, they couldn't conduct an interrogation while driving in a small car.

Jannah shook her head for the second time. "I still don't believe it. It was so easy! He’s the Vice-Chancellor and he goes there alone? Unbelievable."

"Reckless," Erik confirmed.

"Arrogant," Hendrik grumbled.

Only Dominik saw it differently. "Neither."

Jannah eyed him questioningly. "What do you mean?"

"You do not think like confessors. And you can’t because of your emotions. Why shouldn't he be out on his own?"

"Because the risk of something happening to him is too high."

"Wrong mindset. He moves in a country where confessors are feared. No one would touch him. He would rather be cheered and patted on the back for how well he's handled this severe crisis. From his point of view, the risk of being caught by us is negligible. After all, he feels neither fear nor worry. And that’s the only reason it worked.”

Erik shook his head. “Crazy world. No emotions. Surely life isn’t worth living without them? I mean, sorry, Dominik, but I can’t imagine a world without emotions.”

“Be glad you didn’t have to experience that.” He turned away and eyed his former boss, who sat slumped on one of the two chairs.

Dominik’s face was like a mask.

They were silent.

The silence weighed heavily on the bare concrete basement room. Maybe it was because of the soundproof mats or the bloodstained carpet, but probably it was mainly because everything had already been said.

Hendrik sighed, grabbed a bottle of beer from the shelf, wiped off the thin film of dust that had settled on the bottle, and cracked it open on the metal edge of the shelf. For seconds he sank into contemplating the froth that oozed from the opening like a mushroom, then he pulled a pill case from his pants pocket, opened it, and glanced inside. “I’ve got four Make Me Free capsules left," he said bitterly, taking one and gulping it down with beer. "But it probably won't make any difference soon anyway." He raised the bottle to his lips again and drank in greedy gulps. Bubbles rose in the bottle.

Erik joined him, also taking a beer from the case and examining the label. "A good Augustiner, then," he joked. "I've always known alcohol to be the best solution." He, too, cracked open the bottle, toasted the crowd, and drank along with Hendrik.
